Fallout 4 wasn’t always going to be set in Boston, Bethesda Game Studios has revealed.
In a new documentary from Noclip which chronicles Bethesda’s history, Design Director Emil Pagliarulo said that the original design documents for Fallout 4 used New York as the setting. However, New York was just one of the ideas the team was toying with.
As journalist and narrator Danny O’Dwyer explained in the documentary, San Francisco was also on the table. In fact, O’Dwyer said, to keep San Francisco open as a potential setting for future games, Bethesda asked developer Obsidian Entertainment to remove a line of dialogue from Fallout: New Vegas which described the city as being “totally wiped off the map.”
