Players who have been closely following the recent influx of enthusiasm for Star Wars have likely heard talk about an upcoming Star Wars game from Electronic Arts that was being spearheaded by former Uncharted director Amy Hennig. Unfortunately, it seems that project may not ever surface, at least not in its originally intended form, as Hennig has revealed that she left EA back in January, and is no longer involved in its development.
Speaking to Eurogamer at today’s Gamelab conference in Barcelona, Hennig stated that she departed from EA months ago, and has since gone on to form her own independent studio. As such, this means that her original vision for a Star Wars game has been scrapped entirely — which may have already been the case, considering that Hennig was previously working with Visceral Games, which EA decided to shut down last October, with news at the time stating that the company wanted “pivot” from her original concept.
When Hennig was asked if she was still acting as a creative director for the Star Wars project, her response was clear-cut: “I’m not, I have not worked at EA since January, technically, legally.”
As for what she’s been up to recently, Hennig gave some details as to her current ambition with regard to independent games development, including interest in building a small team and maybe even putting together some VR projects.
“I’m working independently and staying independent, she said. “I just started my own small little independent studio and am consulting with some people. I’m hoping to bring some people on board, I would love to have a little company of about six to eight people, 15 at the most, and do some more projects, do some VR stuff – I’m consulting with some VR companies and doing a ton of research because I haven’t played a lot to immerse myself in it.”
As for the Star Wars project and Hennig’s own personal involvement, she had this to say:
“So yeah, I’m not doing anything Star Wars,” Hennig said. “[Who] knows what the future may hold, but that project is on the shelf now.”
