This weekend I attended Dortmund Safari Zone, Pokémon Go’s first big live event of the summer, and everything did not go entirely to plan. It was a positive experience overall, but once again it was not without its technical wobbles.
On Sunday morning I got to chat with John Hanke, the boss of Pokémon Go developer Niantic, to ask what went wrong and what Niantic was doing to ensure its events continued to improve.
In our wide-ranging chat we also touched on various other hot-button issues – the company’s work to battle bots and how it affects users, the frequency of updates to the game, and – of course – the upcoming Squirtle community day.
