Tencent is a major entity in the gaming industry and has been making big splashes, like their first public E3 appearance, regularly as of late. The investment holding company launched its PC games marketplace back in September, but is taking it worldwide starting with Hong Kong.
“The Hong Kong version of WeGame is now under development,” a spokesperson said. “This version will be available for overseas users, and we will use this platform to bring more Chinese games to the global market.”
GameIndustry.biz reported via the South China Morning Post that the Hong Kong edition of WeGame is in the works. The report suggests the move is in response to a Chinese version of Steam being announced. Steam already has a significant Chinese audience and, as with any Steam competitor, WeGame has a very tough battle ahead. Nevertheless, Tencent has hands in a great many pots, which gives them the power to propel the marketplace to a solid degree of success. A few of those pots include Epic Games, Activision Blizzard, and could eventually include PUBG-developer Bluehole Studio.
There’s no set release window for the Hong Kong edition of WeGame but stay tuned to Shacknews for additional updates.
