For all that Marvel has worked to position Carol Danvers as the female face of the Marvel Universe in recent years, her actual solo comic hasn’t always measured up. The latest incarnation of the series seeks to find balance between superheroics and character drama by going back to the very beginning of Carol’s story. It’s not a home run by any means, but The Life of Captain Marvel #1 isn’t a bad jumping-on point for the character.

While the new series seemed like it would deliver a straightforward retelling of Carol’s origin story when first announced, in truth only a small portion of the book focuses on flashback material. Writer Margaret Stohl is clearly more interested in looking forward than behind. The goal is to explore how Carol’s childhood trauma shapes her present-day life.
