The rise of internet-connected “smart home” devices has made it easier than ever to keep an eye on your home while you’re out and about. Whether you’re keeping an eye on your cats from work, or checking for burglars while you’re out for the night, a Wi-Fi enabled security camera is an affordable way to keep an eye on your crib.

For this list I’ll be focusing on plug-and-play, cloud-connected security cameras. There are other types of security systems out there—like Ethernet-connected CCTV cameras—but putting together a CCTV system is more complex, especially since you’ll be mixing and matching cameras with DVR units, across a wide range of budgets (from the super cheap EZVIZ systems to the more expensive Hikvision cameras). They’re great if you want to wire up and manage your own system rather than relying on someone else’s “cloud,” but for the sake of this guide, I’m going to keep it simple since most people just want a few cameras for their house or apartment.
