After the curiously chaotic slog that was Season 5, which depicted a prison riot playing out in televisual “real time,” Netflix’s Orange is the New Black returns to its tonal and structural basics with a sixth season focusing on the riot fallout and most everyone’s transfer over to Litchfield’s maximum-security prison.

With this shift in location, both the rioters and guards find themselves in a more rigid and dangerous sandbox, where the show’s core ensemble becomes trapped in a decades-long turf war between two cruel and cantankerous sisters, Carol and Barbara (Henny Russell and Mackenzie Phillips). The locale change-up works well and stands as one of the most captivating elements of Season 6, presenting us with a shiny new nightmarish setting that allows for more evenly paced proceedings, as the stricter rules, forced separation, and “Prisoner’s Dilemma” aspects create a desperate and dire canvas where hardly anyone is able to fully, or easily, communicate with one another.
