When Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement wrote, directed and starred in offbeat vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows in 2014, the New Zealanders were perhaps best known for Clement’s quirky series Flight of the Conchords and Waititi’s indie darling Boy. In the years since, Clement has become one of the industry’s most interesting performers thanks to breakout roles in FX’s Legion and Disney’s Moana, while Waititi has established himself as one of Hollywood’s most visionary directors thanks to his franchise-saving take on Thor: Ragnarok.
Now they’re adapting What We Do in the Shadows into a TV series for FX, shifting the narrative from Wellington to New York to tell a new story about three lazy vampires who have been roommates for hundreds of years.
