Strange Brigade rests upon the pulpiest of premises. An ancient tomb somewhere in Africa has been disturbed by a British archaeologist, releasing the vengeful spirit of Queen Seteki and a host of horrors, from giant scorpions to hordes of shambling mummies. To clear up this unholy mess, the British government despatches the eponymous team.
It’s a really fun premise and rich setting, which neatly blends the Victorian high adventure novels of H.Rider Haggard, the anxious Imperial gothic of Arthur Conan Doyle, and the rollicking Saturday morning matinees that inspired Indiana Jones into a spirited confection. Setting and tone are undoubtedly Strange Brigade’s greatest strengths and most endearing attributes.
