The year will be 2019, and as you sit in a movie theater, shoving popcorn into your face as James Marsden interacts with a CGI blue hedgehog, you may ask yourself, “How did we get here?” Collider revealed a few new details about the plot of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and it will revolve around a “race” to recover “Sonic’s rings.” Usually, in the games, rings aren’t so important to the story compared to the gameplay, so perhaps the rings are a metaphor for Sonic’s manhood.
James Marsden (X-Men, Westworld) will play a police officer who goes on this road trip to San Francisco with Sonic, voiced by Ben Schwartz. Dr. Eggman, as played by Jim Carrey, will also be in pursuit of these rings. So yeah, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie will basically be a buddy cop movie. Back in June, Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos described the movie as being about “a juvenile delinquent on the adventures in a pretty straight rural environment with a local policeman,” so expect Sonic to be a little shit in this movie.
In casting news, Adam Pally (Happy Endings) will play a fellow cop, while Neal McDonough (Dum Dum Dugan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) will play a yet-to-be-revealed role. As always, I have two questions: 1) Will Crush 40 do the musical score? 2) Will. Sonic. Bang. A human. Lady. We’ll get these answers when Sonic the Hedgehog arrives in theaters on November 15, 2019.
