If you watched all the way through Star Trek: Discovery you know that it ended on a cliffhanger that surprised, angered, and excited Trek fans. The show also heavily involved Spock’s family, but no Spock. I’m going to talk about that ending below so if you’re still planning to binge the show then don’t go on.
With all the crossing paths for Spock to show up in the show, it was pretty inevitable that it was going to happen, and it was confirmed a little while ago. Considering the Enterprise showed up it was somewhat of a foregone conclusion. However, we didn’t know who would take on the role. With the announcement that Ethan Peck will portray the iconic character, we have that answer. Before you ask, yes, he is related to Gregory Peck. Producer Alex Kurtzman released this statement:
Through 52 years of television and film, a parallel universe and a mirror universe, Mr. Spock remains the only member of the original bridge crew to span every era of Star Trek. The great Leonard Nimoy, then the brilliant Zachary Quinto, brought incomparable humanity to a character forever torn between logic and emotion. We searched for months for an actor who would, like them, bring his own interpretation to the role. An actor who would, like them, effortlessly embody Spock’s greatest qualities, beyond obvious logic: empathy, intuition, compassion, confusion, and yearning. Ethan Peck walked into the room inhabiting all of these qualities, aware of his daunting responsibility to Leonard, Zack, and the fans, and ready to confront the challenge in the service of protecting and expanding on Spock’s legacy. In that spirit, we’re thrilled to welcome him to the family.
Evidently, this Spock will be a bit of a different take from what we’ve known in the past. Peck is definitely a bit of a different look. This reinforces my theory that Discovery is taking place in a different universe than TOS and the rest of the original Trek shows. They already set up universe hopping in the first season and I just can’t see them jumping on board the original Enterprise and pushing an even more aggressive rewriting of Spock’s backstory. There’s just too many differences for this universe to be the same one without a ton of retconning. There’s something going on here… I hope.
I’m excited to figure out a way to stream the second season for free or heavily discounted as I enjoyed the first season a good amount. It had flaws in some episodes, but overall I liked the direction the show took by the end and hope it will continue to twist and turn a bit.
