The dystopian nightmare of The Purge has finally become a TV series – premiering September 4 on USA with a 10-episode first season.
So what could there still be to explore within the world of The Purge, the warped, alternate-reality American “holiday” we’ve now seen over the course of four movies, from beginning (in The First Purge) to the ostensible end (in The Purge: Election Year)? Well, for starters, the series, at 10 hours total, is longer than all four movies combined and aims to focus more on characters, giving the entire franchise a chance to present fans with a different, more complex story.
I visited the New Orleans set of the new Purge series this past summer to chat with showrunner Tom Kelly, along with the on-hand cast, about how this new show deepens the mythology of the saga while presenting viewers with a chance to really empathize with – or at least understand – the sprawling ensemble of Purge participators.
