The news that the late Carrie Fisher will appear in Star Wars: Episode IX via unused footage from The Force Awakens was an absolute stunner for fans. We knew that CGI would not play a role in bringing the princess-turned-general back to the Star Wars saga, and we also knew she would not be recast. Either approach would have most likely felt disingenuous and taken us out of the story. Mark Hamill even went on record as saying he was not a fan of having someone else play the iconic character.
But really, how can you have the end of the Skywalker saga without Leia Organa? So this news is something of a relief for so many fans who want one last chance to watch Carrie Fisher on the silver screen. But what are we going to see? Yes, Episode IX director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm announced that unused footage would be repurposed to bring Fisher back, but the question remains: What footage are we talking about here?
