CD Projekt Red put us (and a lot of other outlets) in an awkward position at E3. We saw a Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay demo that was nearly 50 minutes long. Everyone else saw a short trailer that premiered during Xbox’s press conference. There’s an incredible gulf between the two.

Cyberpunk 2077 dominated E3 conversations among anyone who was lucky enough to attend that demo. Reactions were almost universally overwhelmingly positive. (You can read our full preview here.) We gave it our staff E3 2018 Game of the Show. Cyberpunk 2077 impressed, but the vast majority of people were forced to either trust that it was impressive or remain skeptical until they saw it firsthand.

After showing the same demo at gamescom, CD Projekt Red has decided to share it with everyone. Now you can see this role-playing first-person shooter in action. Now you know literally everything that anyone knows about Cyberpunk 2077 — anyone outside of CD Projekt Red’s walls, at least.

In a press release, director Adam Badowski explains why the developer was originally intent to keep this footage from the public. “Since many of the assets and mechanics in the current version of Cyberpunk 2077 are most likely to be modified, we initially decided to show this gameplay only to media,” he said. “Elements like gunplay (both in terms of visuals and how RPG stats influence it), netrunning, car physics, or the game’s UI — everything’s pretty much still in the playtest phase and we felt uneasy about publicly committing to any particular design. Animation glitches, work-in-progress character facial expressions, early versions of locations — all this made us hesitant to release what you’re about to see.”

Block off the better part of an hour and find out what makes Cyberpunk 2077 tick. Maybe it’ll be to your liking or maybe it won’t. At least you won’t have to wonder anymore.
