One of the things I like best about Justin Roiland’s writing is his ability to engender serious investment in its story and characters, while simultaneously giving approximately zero shits about anything. The fact that most characters names in Rick & Morty are the sci-fi equivalent of Man Humanguy, or that performers often recognize the ridiculousness of the lines they’re reading – and that the editors then use those takes – would have killed other shows that were more self-effacing or less genuine in their message. Trover Saves the Universe is looking to continue this trend, amplifying it for the digital stage by turning the “wink-wink-nod-nod” TV approach into a “literally-yank-out-your-eyeballs-and-slam-them-into-a-controller” VR action-platformer.
