Blizzard announced today that it’s putting development of Hearthstone: Heroes of WarCraft’s tournament mode, which Blizzard had previously planned to release this year, “on hold.” According to Blizzard, the company felt the tournament functionality it was creating would only appeal to a small audience of players.
But the publisher still sees tournaments as “an important part” of expanding Hearthstone’s social features.
“Tournaments can serve many different audiences, but the implementation we’d arrived at catered to a very specific audience of players. Instead of broadening Hearthstone with an exciting new way to play, it felt ‘tacked on,'” reads a post on Hearthstone’s website “and wasn’t integrating well into the larger Hearthstone experience.”
