For the latest issue of Game Informer, we travelled to The Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, New York to tour their amazing archive of gaming history. You can learn more about the history and mission of the museum in our interview with Jeremy Saucier who is the assistant vice president for interpretation and electronic games by clicking here.
All week long we’re rolling out exclusive videos showing off some of the museum’s most interesting artifacts that are foundational to gaming history, and today’s video focuses on the history of the RTS genre by showing a prototype of Age of Empires from designer Bruce Shelley at Ensemble Studios. Check out the video above to see The Strong Museum’s digital games curator Andrew Borman show off the 1995 build which features a surprising number of survival elements and the complete lack of the Age of Empires’ series signature age structure.
