While this is about as surprising as Michael Myers killing people, Halloween came in at the top of the box office, knocking off Venom which had held the top spot for the past two weeks. Coming in at $77.5 million, this is the best opening weekend for Halloween in its entire 11(!) movie franchise history. Without another big horror movie getting a wide release before Halloween, I wouldn’t be surprised if Halloween sticks at the top next weekend as well.
Venom which fell two spots landed below A Star is Born which held onto second place for the third week in a row. Goosebumps 2 also held its place in the box office ranking fourth while First Man dropped two spots down to number five. The big riser this week was The Hate U Give which added 2,000 theaters to its distribution and jumped up 330% from last weekends earnings.
Sadly it looks like Bad Times at the El Royale will be going down as a box office flop. It’s only its second week and it’s almost out of the top 10 without recouping even its shooting budget. Are slowly paced moves just doomed to failure now in this speedy social-media-driven society? Sad times at the El Cine if that is the case.
