This weekend saw the 2018 World Championships of uber-popular MOBA League of Legends. While the tournament saw a series of high-stakes, high-intensity battles, the real talking point appears to be excellent musical performance that opened the Grand Finals.
Riot Games debuted LoL’s new theme, “POP/STARS”, with an energetic and very slick stage show, which saw actually-alive vocalists Madison Beer, (G)I-DLE and Jaira Burns team up with LoL’s own digital pop performers “K/DA”, comprised of Akali, Ahri, Evelynn and Kai’Sa. The two groups bust out the new song in a smart production that combined digital imagery with live action footage. I gotta admit, it’s cool as hell
Following the performance, Riot Games released an official music video for POP/STARS, which has been viewed over 12 million times in two days. Never one to miss a buck, Riot also announced that skins worn by K/DA during the performance were being made available to purchase in-game. This got many fans dizzy with excitement, leading to reports that the frontend of the League of Legends store crashed immediately afterward.
In the Grand Finals, Invictus Gaming defeated Fnatic to bag the Summoner’s Cup and the title of League of Legends 2018 World Cup Champions. You can check out both the live performance and music video for POP/STARS below.
