At Flixist we don’t publish every story we write on Destructoid. We try to curate our content over here to bigger ticket items, reviews, and some fun niche stuff. With that in mind, you’re probably wondering why I’ve chosen to publish a story about a possible third film in the Paddington series coming out as, at face value, that doesn’t quite seem in line with the general audience here.
Well, it’s quite simple: Paddington and Paddington 2 are two of the best children’s movies in the last ten years. Full stop (as the delightful British people that inhabit the delightful world of the Paddington films would say). I’m going to make you all watch them if it kills me. So that’s why you’re reading this.
Now, I know those of you who have not seen the movies yet (or seen my rants) are scratching your head as you, much like me initially, were under the impression that a series of Paddington films were nothing more than cheap children’s fodder, but you could not be more wrong. The first film was dumped into January to fail but went on to make $268 million through word of mouth and the second movie still has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They are easily some of the most charming, loving, wonderful, and enjoyable movies I have ever seen. Not only that, but they treat the children viewing them with respect, and never feel like they’re pandering. It’s a style of kid’s filmmaking that can only be compared to the best of Pixar, and everyone who hasn’t seen them is a fool. A fool, I tell you!
Now we have a third film coming, despite the under-performance at the box office of the second film. Collider reports that director Paul King is sadly unlikely to return as director. He’ll still be heavily involved, as he’s a major part of why the films work, but, thanks in large part to his stellar work on these films, he’s kind of busy now. Whatever his status, this is fantastic news and you should all be as excited as I am about it.
