Though its release is still some ways off, those working on the animated Super Mario Bros. film have begun to reveal some of the general challenges that must be faced in properly bringing the iconic franchise to the big screen.
In Variety profile on Illumination Animation CEO Chris Meledandri, he revealed what he believes went so wrong with the critically-panned 1993 live-action adaptation of Super Mario Bros. starring Bob Hoskins. He believes the filmmakers didn’t work with Nintendo closely enough to follow a vision that the franchise has maintained since the ‘80s. He plans to avoid this mistake by working directly with Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto.
