Nintendo plans to remove a controversial Native American reference from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Mr. Game & Watch character.

Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Mr. Game & Watch character appeared with a feather on his head and torch in his hand during Nintendo’s recent Japanese Super Smash Bros. Ultimate live stream. It’s a callback to the 1982 game Fire Attack, in which players controlled a cowboy who had to defend a wooden fort from Native Americans attempting to set it on fire.

“Nintendo has been planning to distribute an update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that removes the feather from the silhouette of Mr. Game & Watch,” a Nintendo spokesperson toldĀ Eurogamer. “The original game on which this depiction of the character is based was released more than three decades ago and does not represent our company values today.
