When a show’s been on as long as It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and has been churning out clever and cruel satire for so many years, sometimes the best direction to take is an earnest, emotional one.

And that’s exactly what happened last week in Always Sunny’s Season 13 finale, “Mac Finds His Pride.” For more than a decade, The Gang has flirted with seriousness, planting a few seeds here and there for storylines that could grow into something a bit more meaningful and layered – from Charlie’s unrequited love to Dennis deciding to settle down – but none of them rounded out into anything honorable. But back in Season 12, when Mac came out to his friends in the episode “Hero or Hate Crime?,” the series unearthed its unexpected, stunning heart.
