This week’s Titans further solidifies the pattern established by the previous episodes. Apparently the show is just going to keep alternating between plot-driven episodes and side stories that focus more on individual characters and guest stars. This is starting to become a frustrating approach. With the first season rapidly drawing to a close, it’s enough to wonder how much progress the show will be able to make in terms of building the team and establishing the threat amassing against them. It’s definitely too much to expect Raven’s journey to wrap up by the end of Season 1.
Still, these regular side-stories have always managed to add something to the bigger picture. Like “Hawk and Dove,” “Jason Todd” introduces another DC superhero as a way of shedding more light on Dick Grayson’s troubled background. Curran Walters’ Jason Todd is both an entertaining anti-hero in his own right and a sobering reminder of what Dick Grayson might have become had he stuck around Gotham City much longer.
