Good news for shmup fans this weekend, as Japanese developer M2, under their new moniker of M2A, has announced that the old-school Aleste series is preparing to return to the skies with a new title in 2019.
The Aleste series of vertically-scrolling shooters began way back in 1988 with Aleste for the Sega Master System in Japan, spawning several sequels on multiple formats throughout the late ’80s/early ’90s. The series is best known in the west for the 1992 SNES release Super Aleste, which featured high-octane action and memorable bosses.
There is very little information on the new Aleste title, other than a release window of next year in Japan, but we should be hearing more around the Summer. It appears this very early announcement was made to coincide with the series’ 30th anniversary. Hopefully the new game will feature the dramatic storytelling, and ballistic chaos that is the series trademark.
