As of this writing, Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther is the highest-grossing film of 2018 (domestic) as well as one of the year’s best reviewed. Although Black Panther was released back in February, a month that infrequently produces awards bait, there was nonetheless immediate and undeniable Oscar buzz surrounding it. Immediately after Black Panther’s release, the external conversation began: Would this film, the 18th in an ultra-popular and well-regarded series of superhero films, finally be the first of its genre to be nominated for Best Picture? It didn’t happen for The Dark Knight. It didn’t happen for Logan. It didn’t happen for Wonder Woman. Maybe this time the superhero bug would finally make its way into the ear of The Academy.
