The Game Awards 2018 kicked off with three titans of console gaming all taking the stage together. PlayStation’s Shawn Layden, Xbox’s Phil Spencer, and Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime all sauntered out, looking ready to make some kind of giant industry-shaking announcement.

And then they didn’t. When it seemed like a commitment to cross-platform play was right on the verge of coming out of their mouths, nothing definitive happened. They said that all three companies are dedicated to uniting players, but no actual plans were announced.

Oh well, at least it was a cool moment.
