After Netherrealm Studios kept quiet about what was working throughout most of the year, their final reveal was expected, but no less exciting: Mortal Kombat 11.
At this year’s The Game Awards show, Ed Boon showed off the studio’s return to their violent roots. In the first trailer for the game, we see a familiar fight: Scorpion Vs. Raiden. As it unfolds, however, things start to appear different: Raiden is rocking red lightning, which in the cartoon logic of Mortal Kombat indicates he’s either very mad or outright evil. Meanwhile, Scorpion looks slightly different, but nothing out of the realm of a redesign. Raiden ends up winning the fight, but it’s quickly revealed Scorpion was not alone. He’s joined by… Scorpion, who eventually kills Raiden.
The last few seconds of the trailer reveal what this is all about: A mysterious woman is seen touching a giant hourglass, flowing in reverse. This likely means there’s some time-warping tomfoolery going on, similar to the events that started the whole reboot aspect of 2011’s Mortal Kombat.
The trailer also revealed the game is sooner out than we might have expected: It’s coming April 23, with a community reveal event coming on January 17. That’s likely when we’ll get our first look at how this premise might play out in the game itself.
