The first teaser trailer for Avengers: Endgame doesn’t reveal a whole lot about the plot of this sequel, other than the fact that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are in a bad way following Thanos’ Decimation. But one thing this footage does show is Clint Barton’s new costume. He’s apparently abandoned the Hawkeye mantle and become Ronin.

That one change actually tells us a lot about the status quo of the MCU post-Infinity War and why Earthlings may be less than thrilled with their superheroes. Read on to find out why this costume change is so significant.

Who Is Ronin?

For those not familiar with Ronin, he’s not a character so much as a cover identity used by several different heroes. In the comics, the Ronin costume was first worn by Daredevil’s ally Echo. It then passed to Clint Barton following his death and resurrection at the hands of the Scarlet Witch (she was going through some issues at the time).
