Let’s get it out of the way right up front: There’s not a single battle royale game on this year’s list of nominees for Best PC Game of 2018. That should fill some of you with a warm, fuzzy delight as if you’re seeing old friends for the first time in 10 years.
But, isn’t the process of voting really just a battle royale when you strip down all the pretense? You start with a bunch, seven in this case. And you whittle it down until there’s only one winner. Everything is a battle royale. Life is a battle royale.
The whittling will be tough this year. There were a lot of PC games that stole our collective heart. Dead Cells captured our attention unlike any roguelike over the past few years. The Messenger was a masterclass in Ninja Gaiden-like mechanics. Return of the Obra Dinn actually made us feel like detectives. World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth is the only game here with an established foothold on PC, considering it’s an MMO that has stuck around for well over a decade.
Who gets the chicken dinner or the victory royale? Your guess is as good as mine. I’m just here to list the contenders.
