Transformers is a franchise that calls to mind some specific images: neon plastic toys, cheapy animated Saturday morning cartoons, hair-band power anthems of the ‘80s, Michael Bay explosions and raunch — you get the idea. Whether your nostalgia buttons are pushed by the originals or you can remember crunching through a bucket of popcorn for the live-action movies, chances are you don’t need someone to explain what Transformers are or what the basics of their story involve. Autobots, fearless heroes; Decepticons, evil villains. Endless war, alien planets, a list of glowing MacGuffins a mile long, and so on and so on. It’s pop entertainment in its most basic form — mindless at best and silly at worst.
