Thanks to a profitable Holiday season, sales of Sony’s PlayStation 4 console reached a staggering 91.6 million units, as of December 31, 2018. PlayStation hardware in general is believed to have sold some 5.6 million units throughout the winter season.

“Thanks to the continued support from our fans during the holiday season, we are pleased to announce that PS4 has reached 91.6 million units globally. We are also happy to announce that the monthly active users of PlayStation Network has surpassed 90 million as of end of November,” said John Kodera, President of Sony Interactive. “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones”.

As for software, Sony has announced the sale of 50.7 million units worldwide over the winter. The excellent web-swinging adventure Marvel’s Spider-Man saw incredible success, shifting some nine million copies between its September launch and November 25 of last year.

Sales of the PlayStation 4 console are starting to bear down on the sales of the original Playstation, which sold around 102 million units over its lifetime. But Sony are still a long way off from catching up with the PlayStation 2 however, still ruling the roost wit, incredibly, over 155 million consoles sold.
