Christopher McQuarrie, the writer and director responsible for Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Fallout, is set to write and direct two more sequels back-to-back.
Reported by Variety, the reasoning for the combined schedule is to capitalize on the major critical and financial success of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which was both the best reviewed and highest-grossing film in the franchise to date. The first sequel is expected to premiere in Summer 2021 while the second will likely follow in Summer 2022. Paramount Pictures allegedly wants to avoid cannibalizing sales for its upcoming Tom Cruise-led Top Gun: Maverick, which is set to hit theaters on June 26, 2020.
