No one will be surprised to hear that a superhero comic has gotten a little bit crazy plot-wise. After all, that’s kind of what they’re known for, right? Resurrections and universe-destroying stakes and time travel — you know, the works. But the level of off-the-wall wackiness in the latest run of DC’s Justice League comic series has exceeded all expectations, and might even be setting a new standard in superheroic absurdity. And it’s doing it all by blending some of your nostalgic Saturday morning cartoon faves with some of the deepest possible deep cuts into DC’s lore.

On the surface, Justice League looks like a pretty approachable book for the layman. It features a team roster instantly familiar to fans of the beloved Justice League animated series, and the villains are the most iconic members of the Legion of Doom — yes, the bad guy group from the Super Friends cartoon has finally come to comics — which certainly sounds like a recipe for an easy book to follow.
