Among Dragon Quest fans, there’s usually hot debate over what game in the series is actually the best. Dragon Quest III was the culmination of a three-game arc, VIII brought the series into 3D, XI brought the artstyle to life in a way that hadn’t been possible before. For my money, Dragon Quest V stands above them all, and it seems the Japanese movie industry agrees, as an animated film adaptation of the game has been announced for release in 2019.
Titled Dragon Quest: Your Story, the movie adapts the tale of the Dragon Quest hero with an extraordinary ability to relate with monsters. The story of the game takes place over 30 years of the protagonist’s life and involves his family, getting married, having children, and a quest to rid the world of a tormenting captor.

Dragon Quest V was the first game in the series not to release in America. A PlayStation 2 remake was seemingly intended for release in the west, but also never came out. It wasn’t until the 2009 Nintendo DS remake that the game finally arrived on western shores with the subtitle Hand of the Heavenly Bride.
There has not been any indication that Your Story will release outside of Japan, but hopefully it’s both good and widely available.
