Eric Khoo grew up watching horror cinema. Some of his earliest memories revolve around sitting next to his mother in the local cinema and getting an education in terror. It was a formative experience, and one that he shared with his friend and collaborator Joko Anwar.
The two directors have come together as part of HBO’s Folklore, a six-episode series created by Khoo which utilizes its anthology format as a way to showcase multiple directors, each from a different country in Asia. (Read our review of HBO’s Folklore.)
Folklore is a brilliant introduction to Asian horror for new potential fans while also being surprising enough for viewers who are aware of the continent’s vast contributions to the genre. For Khoo, the anthology series was a dream project that was years in the making, and owed a little something to an iconic American show.
