The surprising word came today that writer-director James Gunn has been rehired by Disney to direct Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn was fired from the project last summer after a Twitter scandal regarding old tweets of his resurfaced, but now the filmmaker is back at the helm of the franchise he has overseen from its start.
The thing is, Gunn also has another superhero project in the works, and one from the Direct Competition — DC’s Suicide Squad sequel at Warner Bros. In the time between Gunn’s firing and rehiring by Disney, he was reportedly a wanted commodity at other studios, and he wound up taking the job on Suicide Squad 2 as writer-director, with an eye to retooling the franchise with mostly new characters and cast. Will Smith opted to not return for the film as Deadshot, and recently reports indicated that Idris Elba is in talks to replace him in the role.
