In light of the release of Sekiro: Shadow’s Die Twice, we wanted to take a look back at FromSoftware’s original hardcore juggernaut, Dark Souls. This feature was originally released in 2016, but has been updated to include current releases.

It’s easy to assume Dark Souls and its 2009 predecessor Demon’s Souls came out of nowhere, Both games took huge risks, boldly breaking away from the trend of modern hand-holding action RPGs. But the Souls series’ unique approach to combat and exploration was actually more than a decade in the making, dating back to the very first game FromSoftware ever made.
