Superman turned 1,000 last year through the historic release of Action Comics‘ 1,000th issue, and today Batman celebrates the same milestone through the release of Detective Comics‘ 1,000th issue. This 96-page comic book consists of several short stories that highlight Batman’s past, present, and future, penned by some of the most acclaimed writers today.
Recent DC recruit Brian Michael Bendis took a break from Superman duties to tell a Batman tale, and you’ll also see new work from Warren Ellis, Paul Dini, Tom King, Kevin Smith, Geoff Johns, Peter J. Tomasi, Scott Snyder, Christopher Priest, and Dennis O’Neil. The list of artists accompanying these stories is just as impressive. The great Greg Capullo is on hand, as is Neal Adams, Doug Mahnke, Alex Maleeve, Joëlle Jones, Alvaro Martinez, Dustin Nguyen, Jim Lee, Kelly Jones, Steve Epting, and Tony S. Daniel.
The main newsstand cover is illustrated by Jim Lee and Scott Williams, but DC is also offering over dozens of variants, several of which highlight moments from each decade of Batman’s existence. The 1980s cover is done by Frank Miller, and yes, it’s The Dark Knight Returns.
