Detective Comics #1000 has put a new spin on one of the key elements of Batman’s origin.

In one of many new stories featured in this issue, writer Kevin Smith and artist Jim Lee flash back to an earlier period in Batman’s career. Here, Batman uses his cover identity of Matches Malone in order to infiltrate a black market shop that deals in relics from Gotham City’s most infamous crimes. Batman is after the most elusive prize of all – the gun Joe Chill used to murder Thomas and Martha Wayne.
