The r/Games Reddit has been shut down for April Fools’ Day in order to shed light on the community becoming increasingly combative and derogatory towards minority and marginalized groups.
The r/GamesMods created this post last night explaining exactly why the r/Games Reddit is being shut down for a day. Until tomorrow, no r/Games posts can be created or commented on. A meta thread for a discussion on this decision will open when r/Games goes back up tomorrow.
t’s come to our attention that what has been intended to be a forum for the potential spread of knowledge and involvement in video games has instead become a battleground of conflicting ideas,” reads the post. “Ordinarily, this isn’t an issue; discussion by its very nature is certain to bring argument, but when that argument descends into vitriolic attacks between individuals on a regular basis with no chance at deescalation, that’s when, put simply, something’s got to give.”
