Titans and Doom Patrol offer what is easily the darkest vision of the DC Universe we’ve ever seen on the small screen. But both shows (and Doom Patrol in particular) have gotten away with the grim and gritty approach by ensuring there’s plenty of humor and self-awareness to balance out the misery. This week’s Doom Patrol episode stands out because it goes one step further. The series isn’t just self-aware and goofy this week, it shows that it’s possible to find great joy in the unhappy lives of these metahuman misanthropes.
