Today we continue our look at each of the founding MCU Avengers and how their stories have led them to their final confrontation with Thanos. Next up is the Incredible Hulk himself and his journey to Avengers: Endgame.
Though it’s often easy to forget, the Hulk is one of the oldest MCU heroes. Debuting only one month after Tony Stark, in the days when a Paramount logo preceded Iron Man, it seemed normal for Universal, the company that still holds certain cinematic rights to the character, to distribute a Hulk movie under the shared MCU banner. The Incredible Hulk didn’t set the world on fire the way that the story of the retired arms dealer turned armored hero did, but it achieved another feat: It introduced Bruce Banner and the Hulk into the MCU canon. Eleven years later, Marvel’s own muscly, green Jekyll and Hyde analog has gone from rogue loner to Avenger to champion of a galactic gladiatorial contest to the terrified herald of Thanos’ arrival on Earth. And as we get ever closer to Endgame, it’s time to look back at the rise and (literal) fall of the man who should have been able to beat the Mad Titan.
