SPOILERS AHEAD for Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 3 – “The Long Night.”

Theon’s death in tonight’s epic episode of Game of Thrones was, according to showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, symbolic of redemption and how we choose to face our final moments of life.

Theon’s last night alive was spent defending Bran from the Night King and his army. However, before the undead enemies arrived, he looked to Bran and began apologizing for all he’s done in the past.

Bran quickly stopped him and said, “everything you did brought you where you are now. Where you belong. Home.”

Then, as the Night King arrived to the Godswood and all seemed lost, Bran looked to Theon and told him, “you’re a good man. Thank you.” Bran knew what was coming, as did Theon, and Theon chose to spend his final moments redeeming himself and making one final, fatal attempt at killing the Night King and, in a sense, all of his prior mistakes.
