In 2006, comics writer Garth Ennis sought to explore the darker side of superhero stories with his wildly irreverent, sexually provocative, and gruesomely violent series The Boys. In the 13 years since the first issue ran, superhero movies have become more than big business, but a worldwide phenomenon. Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy won universal praise, billions at the box office, and even Academy Awards. The MCU not only came into existence, but also became the world’s mightiest franchise with 22 blockbusters to its credit, not to mention a slew of TV shows. And through all this, the superhero genre has become fully formed. Now, The Boys TV show has come for a revisionist reckoning.
