At the end of this month, film audiences around the world will be treated to what is my most anticipated movie of the year: Godzilla: King of the Monsters. As the third film in Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse, King of the Monsters will introduce at least three more Toho legends to the franchise: Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. Every trailer for this film has been a pants-tightening experience, and while I know I’m getting my hopes up given I didn’t particularly care for 2014’s Godzilla, I’m too much of a franchise fan to be bothered by the potential that it might actually be a bad movie.
It’s the same for Godzilla Defense Force, an upcoming Nexon mobile game. There are a lot of red flags in the description of the game that should make me want to avoid it. It’s an idle clicker. It’s also a base builder. It also has some card collecting elements. It’s free-to-play. It’s being made by Nexon. Any of those are reason enough for me to just forget about it and move onto a more worthwhile app, something 2019 has certainly been lacking.
And yet…Godzilla. I look at these screenshots, see the gigantic monsters, and I’m just absolutely giddy, like the first time I saw Bambi Meets Godzilla.
