Reuters is reporting via multiple sources that U.S.-based developer Riot Games (which has been under the spotlight recently for ignominious reasons) is working with its Chinese owners Tencent on a mobile version of its popular MOBA League of Legends.
This is apparently an idea that has been kicked around for years between the two companies as Tencent aims to capitalize on the title’s popularity and make further inroads into the lucrative mobile market.
“League of Legends is not doing as well as it used to,” Newzoo industry analyst Gu Tianyi told Reuters, “so Riot badly needs a new way to monetize the game, especially considering that it is Riot’s only game.”
It’s currently unknown when the title will be ready for release.
