Announced late last year and hit with a delay in February, John Romero’s SIGIL will finally be gracing the internet in short order. An unofficial fifth episode for the original Doom, SIGIL will be releasing for everyone on May 31, 2019, as a free WAD for ID Software’s landmark shooter. While you’ll be able to run it in whatever source port of Doom you’d like, a Tweet from Romero says, “SIGIL FACT: The megawad was designed for original DOOM 1, which means there’s no mouselooking or jumping allowed. If you do, you’re cheating.”

The reason for SIGIL’s belated release comes down to manufacturing delays. A physical version of the mod exists for mega fans of Romero’s work and he delayed the release so no one would have a headstart. I’m not sure how that adds up, though, since some people in the Doom community already have speedruns for SIGIL. At any rate, the rest of us will be able to experience this return to the ’90s on Friday when the mod launches. You’ll be able to nab it from SIGIL’s website.
