When the first images of Toy Story 4’s toy box were unleashed there were plenty of new figures to focus on, but it was the return of Bo Peep that really got fans talking. Not only had it been two decades since the porcelain doll had been a part of the Pixar franchise, but she had a radical new look which saw her get rid of her classic dress and go for a rough and ready, staff-wielding style that was closer to Rey from Star Wars than a shepherdess from a classic kids nursery rhyme. On a recent trip to Pixar’s San Francisco campus, the team behind the new Bo revealed that she’s a key character this time around and her return is a “driving force” for everyone’s favorite Sheriff.
Last seen in Toy Story 2, Bo was mostly known as a potential love interest for Woody rather than the star of her own story, but that was something the team was keen to change. In the footage that was revealed at Cinemacon there’s a scene which established that in the original movies Bo had in fact been the leader of Molly’s room, just like Woody was in Andy’s, but viewers just hadn’t witnessed it yet. Establishing that was key to the journey the pair would go on when they were eventually reunited.
