Tom King, known for writing the Rebirth-era Batman comics for DC, will reportedly co-write the script for the upcoming New Gods movie with director Ava DuVernay.
Reported by The Wrap, the duo will adapt Jack Kirby’s New Gods series of comics, which he first created back in 1971. New Gods involves the natives of two planets: the pristine New Genesis ruled by Highfather and the nightmarish Apokolips ruled by Darkseid. Once part of the same world, Urgrund, the two were split after the death of the “Old Gods” during Ragnarok.
Beyond Batman, King is well-known for his work on Mister Miracle, for which he won a 2018 Eisner Award for best writer. Mister Miracle was another of Kirby’s creations, and was part of his Fourth World storyline that also involved New Gods and Forever People. Justice League villain Steppenwolf and the Mother Box are also Kirby’s creations from the Fourth World Saga.
